PMA (Parts Manufacturer Approval)
PMA is an FAA approval allowing a company other than the original manufacturer to produce and sell an approved replacement part.
A PMA part is approved on the basis of design and production data accepted by the regulator. It is a legitimate alternative to an OEM part where the operator's maintenance programme and, in leased fleets, the lease terms permit its use.
European operators encounter the same concept through EASA acceptance arrangements, and acceptance still depends on the operator's approvals and any contractual restrictions.
PMA availability changes the competitive picture on a part number: it introduces price pressure and a second supply route, but only for customers who accept it.
